How do I choose a name for my UK company? +
  • Pick a unique name that:
  • Isn't already in use
  • Doesn't infringe trademarks
  • Complies with naming rules (see below)
How do I check if a company name is available? +
Use our Company Name Availability Checker to see if your desired name is available or it is already taken.
Can two companies have the same name? +
No. Your name must be distinct, though very similar names may also be rejected (e.g., "Bright Tech Ltd" vs "BrightTech Limited").
What are the rules for naming a UK company? +
  • Your name must NOT:
  • Be the same or too similar to an existing name
  • Include offensive or sensitive words
  • Suggest a connection to government or public bodies (e.g., "British", "Authority", "Government") without permission
  • Contain restricted words unless licensed (e.g., "bank", "charity", "insurance")
  • We have an inbuilt name search system that you can use to check the availability of your company name when placing an order on our website.
Do I have to use 'Limited' or 'Ltd' in the name? +
  • Yes but we automatically apply the 'Ltd' extension to your company name so you do not need to add it when placing your order.
  • You will not need the Ltd or Limited extension if you company is:
  • A charitable company limited by guarantee, and you apply for an exemption
  • A non-profit with permission to omit it
Can I trade under a different name from my registered company name? +
  • Yes! This is called a "trading name". Just make sure:
  • It's not already trademarked
  • It's not misleading or offensive
  • Your official company name appears on documents
Can I reserve a company name in the UK? +
You can only "secure" a name by registering the company. We can help with this.
Can I register a company name that's also a domain name? +
Yes you can. They are independent processes. It's also good to check domain availability and secure it as well.
Can I include numbers or symbols in my company name? +
Yes, but only certain ones. You can use numbers, &, +, (), @, and ., but not emojis or special characters like * or %.
Can I use a non-English word in my company name? +
Yes, but if it's a sensitive word or implies a specific meaning (e.g., "ambassador" in another language), it may be reviewed.
How do I protect my company name legally? +
Registering a name gives you protection at Companies House, but to fully protect it, register it as a UK trademark with the Intellectual Property Office (IPO). We offer trademark registration services.
What if someone else registers a similar name after me? +
You can raise an objection with Companies House. They may force the other company to change its name if it's too similar and causes confusion.
Can I change my company name later? +
Yes, you can change your company at any time after your company has been incorporated. We can assist you to change your company name whenever you want to.
What's the difference between a legal name and a trading name? +
  • Legal name: The registered name with Companies House
  • Trading name: The name you operate under such as your brand name, website name, etc, which can be different (but must comply with naming rules)
Can I register multiple names for the same company? +
No. You can only register one legal company name, but can operate with multiple trading names if needed.
Can I use a location in my company name? +
Yes, it's possible to use a location in your company name (e.g., "England Roofing Ltd", "UK Services Ltd"), etc.
What is a 'sensitive' word or expression? +
  • These are words that require permission to use. Examples:
  • "Association"
  • "Royal"
  • "Trust"

Can I use the same name as a dissolved company? +
Yes, after it's been dissolved for over 12 months, or immediately if you're re-registering it as the same person/entity.
What if I accidentally infringe on a trademark with my company name? +
  • You may be forced to:
  • Change your company name in such a case.
Can I use my personal name as a company name? +
Yes, using your own name (e.g., "John Smith Consulting Ltd") is perfectly acceptable and often easier to get approved.
