GOV.UK Verify can verify identity to log in to HMRC's online services. You can use it to access your tax account and complete your self-assessment. It cannot, however, be use to access your business tax account.

GOV.UK Verify is also available for other government online services. You can use it to view your driving license information or apply for Universal Credit. It is worthwhile to have an account. However, anyone who wants to access their Business Tax Account will still need a Government Gateway ID.

Should I use Government Gateway or GOV?UK Verify?

People who own a business will likely want to use Government Gateway to access their Business Tax Account and all the online services HMRC offers.

For example, anyone who does business with a limited company must access their Business Tax Account to submit their Corporation tax return.

Sole traders may not need access to their tax Accounts if they don't have employees or not VAT registered. In these cases, GOV.UK Verify may be sufficient.

So, there you have it!

Many people find the Government Gateway challenging to understand. However, it can be broken down into components, such as what we did above, and it becomes elementary to navigate. You can leave questions in the comments section and I will get back to them.

A historical note

It is important to remember that the Government Gateway was more than a means of verifying identity. It was a platform that could access a wide range of online government services.

Functions of the Government Gateway

This UK-wide strategy's cornerstone is the Government Gateway. The Gateway offers:

● Authorization and authentication services - These services verify that users are authentic and have access to a particular service or set.

● A single sign-on facility with single credentials is available across all national, regional, and local government services. This allows users to have one user ID, password, or digital certificate for all online public services.

● A typical transaction and routing facility that guarantees reliable delivery of documents. This covers documents between citizens and businesses and the routing of documents between governments.

● Secure messaging facility - Enables secure communication between citizens, government agencies, and businesses.

● An integration tier is a reliable source of information based on the standards of the connecting organization. It also allows local custom integration into existing applications and systems.

● A payment facility that offers both authentication and authenticated payment. It can be used for credit, debit cards, and direct debit.

The Gateway is part of the UK's critical infrastructure for information and offers a high-security environment, resilient service, and high volume handling.

This infrastructure is shared by all national, regional, and local public services.

● This prevents duplication of services and facilities required to connect different government agencies and customers via the internet.

● Provides joined-up services through provisioning a standard authentication. This allows users to interact directly with multiple government agencies in one transaction by using a single identity.

● This allows both the public and private sectors to offer customer-driven apps that can be interacted with by the government consistently.

Benefits of the Government Gateway

● The Gateway is a proven method of connecting back-office systems - it provides an efficient and cost-effective way to connect existing systems using open interoperability standards.

● Single sign-on and masking back-office structures – The Gateway facilitates joined-up transactions, allowing one service to be directed at many government agencies. Back-office complexity is hidden from citizens and businesses.

● Reduced time to deliver projects – Organizations can reduce the work required for electronic services since Gateway already provides some solutions. Government organizations should be able to focus on providing rich, meaningful services electronically and not on the other components like authentication, payments, etc.

● Ability to deliver customer-centric projects - The Gateway provides the infrastructure for joined-up transactions. This allows citizens- and business-focused services, regardless of how many local authorities or departments are involved.

● Interoperability – GovTalk is the UK Government's data interchange standard. The Gateway promotes best practices using XML, schema creation, and interoperability based on open standards.

● Others - Savings in running costs when more services are provided; reduction in fraud; savings due to reduced print, production, and postage costs. The delivery cost leveraging central infrastructure will likely be 25-35% less than silo-based implementation. Joint-up processes reduce overhead across the government.
